Salem Baggage Depot

Salem, Oregon | De Muro Award

After decades of neglect, the Salem Railroad Baggage Depot has been given new life through a careful and deeply respectful restoration effort. Built in 1889, the structure is one of the few remaining Queen Anne–style railroad buildings in Oregon and a rare physical link to the state’s transportation history.

Every significant element of the original structure — the entrances, fenestration, footprint, height, and massing — was meticulously preserved. Historic materials and finishes were repaired or replicated in accordance with established preservation guidelines, ensuring the building’s character and craftsmanship remain intact.

To support contemporary use while honoring the past, two modern canopy structures were added. Their clean, understated forms intentionally contrast with the historic depot, creating a clear dialogue between eras without compromising authenticity. The result is a building that stands proudly in its original identity while meeting the needs of today’s community.
