Lake Cottage

Upper Peninsula, Michigan

Scenic view of a tranquil lake surrounded by lush green forests, featuring a modern cabin on the shore and rocky foreground, reflecting a serene natural landscape under a partly cloudy sky.

Sited at the edge of an inland lake in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Lake Cottage is an off-grid, one-bedroom summer retreat designed around a single organizing idea: dissolving the boundary between inside and out. A simple gabled form clad in dark metal recedes into the surrounding woodland, offering a durable, low-maintenance shell that lets the landscape take precedence. The interior, crafted from locally sourced white cedar and hickory, offers a contemporary interpretation of the traditional northern cabin.
At the heart of the plan, the living and dining space opens through large sliding doors to the forest on the north and a lakeside deck on the south. This breezeway arrangement draws light, air, and landscape through the home, making the natural environment a constant presence in daily life.
At 980 square feet, the cottage is compact by intention. Every element serves the experience of being close to the water, the trees, and the rhythms of a quiet summer.

Impact

The Lake Cottage reflects Studio Good’s approach to regionalism: materials, form, and orientation drawn from the character of a specific place. The use of locally sourced white cedar and hickory connects the interior to the northern forests surrounding it, while the dark metal cladding and simple massing allow the building to settle into its site rather than compete with it. The project demonstrates that thoughtful, small-scale architecture can offer a richness of experience well beyond its footprint.
